This piece is inspired by the painting of the same name by John Collier, from 1889.
Lilith is a famous character within Christian myth, often portrayed as the queen of demons and associated with lust, sex, sensuality and sin. She is believed to be the first wife of Adam, before Eve was created from one of his ribs. I find this interpretation a bit restrictive however, and personally prefer the more modern pagan approach to Lilith, as a portrayal of the 'Dark Feminine' aspect of the psyche, incarnating rebellion, sensuality and femininity in its more daring, unconventional aspects. The serpents, far from representing sin, to me they point to knowledge of self, and how this part of us is essential in having a complete understanding of who we are as humans. Once we accept the dark side, it becomes our friend.
